They're different weapon classes. The former swings faster and takes less stamina per swing while the latter swings slower, using more stamina and dealing a good amount more damage per hit. If you find yourself in a drawn out fight where both parties are doing minor damage it can be a saving grace. In a fight where you both do massive damage and a few hits will cause death for either, bring something upgraded on a damage specific path instead. .
